Wow! Jill of Purl Up With A Good Yarn is having an awesome week. Though a job at a yarn store could get expensive… I worked at a book store once and found that out. Glad I got the opportunity to see her last evening, I’m thinking perhaps some of that karma can rub off ?
Speaking of last evening… WOW! There was a huge turnout for the Sit & Knit! I got out the camera phone and took a couple pictures.

I only hope there is as big of a turnout for the one I’m starting in Washington, PA…
I finished my scarf in the Trendsetter Segue. I did only use one skein but it would have been a lot better with two… No pictures yet. Probably tomorrow when I may have some progress on my latest shawl to post as well.
So, today I went to two yarn shops to ask them to post a flyer I printed up about the sit & knit… (basically I printed out the web page on nice paper and added my e-mail and phone number). What a difference in responses between the two…
The first I went to on my lunch break (I work in Bridgeville). She basically said she wouldn’t put it up for anyone as that’s her policy… THAT would have been fine with me, I understand that policy and I wouldn’t be posting this now… but then she went on to say words to the effect that she “would put it up if we were only promoting her yarn shop as she wouldn’t want to promote it and then have people there knitting with yarn they bought at Michaels.” Well. Isn’t that… special. And rather elitist.
My intention is for the sit & knit to be open to all knitters whether they bought $100 a skein handpainted handspun specialty yarn or $1 a skein bargain clearance acrylic out of the sale bin at Wal-Mart…
Contrast that to the reaction I got when I asked at The Knit Shoppe in Canonsburg on my way home from work… Big Smiles. A “sure!”. So much friendlier response. Again… it all comes down to the way you service your customer, the feeling that you get from the store… If someone asks where a local yarn shop is in the Washington / Bridgeville area who do you think I’m going to remember and mention first?
I need to do some online promoting as well… Hopefully tomorrow morning!
So Mechelle from work who is just learning to knit, went with me at lunch… She also felt that the store’s aura was a bit “stand-offish”. She fell in love with some Schaefer’s Little Danya in the Mr. Funny colorway and that followed her home… She’s been going to town on scarves with Lion Brand Homespun. She’s doing one right now in a colorway that has alot of deep purple in it, very nice.
